A sunny week in the Lake District

A few weeks ago I began working on two DVD projects for release later this summer. ‘Backpacking in the Lake District with Chris Townsend’ and ‘Helvellyn with Mark Richards’. We couldn’t have hoped for better weather in truth. Mind you it was a tad too warm for my liking, what with lugging about a 30kilo pack up and down the fells.

Either way, it was a fab trip with great company and a very productive shoot too. Fellow blogger Mark joined us for a few nights and it was great to catch up with him. You can read more about the trip on Chris’ and Mark’s blogs HERE and HERE.

One thing that kept cropping up in my mind while hiking through bogs, ascending lonely fells and beating off the odd midge was how uncannily similar the weather was to the same month a year ago. I recall June 2013 being very warm and muggy in the Lake District with hardly a breath of wind and I was fortunate enough to enjoy some fine cloud inversions too – sadly the latter wasn’t so prolific but at one point while camping on the flanks of Great Gable with Chris and Mark (as well as Phil another friend) we did have the pleasure of observing radiation fog condense and slowly transform into a sea of cloud over Wasdale Head.

Another highlight of the trip was attending a couple of screenings of my recent Scafell Pike documentary in The Strands Inn and Brewery, Nether Wasdale where I learned Mark Corr had produced a new ale called ‘Scafell Summit’ to celebrate the occasion! And mighty tasty it was too. The perfect post hike pint.

Author and friend to Alfred Wainwright, Mark Richards on Place Fell. A location we chose to film the DVD’s intro.

A fine meadow of cotton grass on the moors of Bleaberry Fell. Great Gable’s distinctive profile can be clearly seen.

Not a bad view from camp eh?

The following morning I filmed Chris relaxing at camp and talking about the joys of backpacking.

I was lucky enough to capture some atmospheric scenes from the summit of High Raise at dawn.

I also managed to film a lovely doe as she wandered about in the morning sun on High Raise.

We slowly but surely made our way over to Rossett Pike,  with ever-changing views of the Lakeland fells.

Looking down into Mickleden. Always a scene to admire.

It was a hot day! So we collected water while on the go. Not being too sure of the stream running off from Angle Tarn
we used Sawyer filters just to be safe and not sorry.
